In our community, ensuring crosswalk safety is essential for protecting everyone who lives and visits The Groves. Crosswalks play a crucial role in safe pedestrian movement, especially in busy areas where families, children, and seniors are active. By keeping our crosswalks safe, we can prevent accidents and save lives, making The Groves a better place for everyone.
For Pedestrians:
- Use Designated Crosswalks: Always cross at crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect pedestrians.
- Look Both Ways: Make sure no vehicles are coming before stepping onto the crosswalk.
- Don’t Cross Intersections Diagonally: Cross horizontally to the other side, and then again to reach your destination.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or listening to music while crossing.
For Drivers:
- Slow Down: The speed limit is 20 MPH in school zones. Further, reduce speed near crosswalks, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Yield to Pedestrians: Always be prepared to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Avoid Distractions: Stay focused on the road and avoid using your phone while driving. Cell phone usage is also not permitted in school zones.
- Watch for Children: Be extra cautious in areas where children are likely to be crossing.
Constable presence has been increased to assist residents with ensuring the safety of all pedestrians during these times.
By following these tips, you can help ensure The Groves remains a safe and welcoming community for all.
Additionally, Humble ISD circulated an email after the start of the 2024-25 school year to address student safety.
WITH SAFETY ALWAYS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN, WE WANTED TO EMPHASIZE SOME IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS:
- BE ESPECIALLY ALERT AROUND CHILDREN AND PREPARED TO STOP AT ANY MOMENT.
- ALWAYS USE TURN SIGNALS.
- FOLLOW THE SPEED LIMIT. SCHOOL ZONE SPEED LIMITS ARE PURPOSEFULLY SET LOW BECAUSE CHILDREN ARE UNPREDICTABLE.
- COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT INTERSECTIONS WITH STOP SIGNS.
- ALWAYS STOP FOR LOADING OR UNLOADING SCHOOL BUSES. DRIVING AROUND STOPPED SCHOOL BUSES IS AGAINST THE LAW.
- PLAN AHEAD. LEAVE EARLY FOR YOUR DESTINATION AND BUILD IN EXTRA TIME FOR CONGESTION, ESPECIALLY AROUND SCHOOLS DURING ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL TIMES.
“HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS TO REVIEW WITH YOUR CHILDREN:
- ALL STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR A HELMET. BICYCLE HELMETS REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
- ALWAYS STOP AND CHECK FOR TRAFFIC IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.
- DON’T WALK OR RIDE TOO CLOSE TO PARKED CARS. DOOR OPENS SUDDENLY.
- STOP AT ALL STOP SIGNS AND OBEY RED LIGHTS, JUST AS CARS DO.
- MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH A DRIVER AND WAIT FOR THE DRIVER TO SIGNAL YOU TO GO.
- LEAVE HOME IN PLENTY OF TIME, DON’T RUSH.
- WEAR BRIGHT COLORED CLOTHES TO BE VISIBLE AND CLOSED TOE SHOES TO PROTECT YOUR FEET.
“THANK YOU FOR BEING PATIENT. WE CAN ALL WORK TOGETHER TO HELP ENSURE SAFETY FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.”
Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 504 (HCMUD 504) thanks all residents for their continued attention and support in ensuring pedestrians' safety within The Groves.
